Friends of Leverett Pond was the second of the Town's Friends groups. Formed in 1978 as a sub-committee of the High Street Hill neighborhood, it has worked to increase awareness of issues of park stewardship. The Friends have held neighborhood celebrations, clean-ups, and pruning workshops -- as well as advocating whenever possible for the historic restoration of Olmsted Park. See also the Emerald Necklace Conservancy website. On June 15, 2003, the Friends celebrated their 25th anniversary. Here's the invitation (pdf) and press release (pdf). |
A beech tree was planted in April 2003 to honor Louise Castle, a Pill Hill neighbor for over 50 years. She was Brookline's first woman Selectman, and as Co-chair of Friends of Leverett Pond since 1980, a staunch supporter of restoration. | ![]() |
